Akij Group (AG) has explicitly violated Section 5(1B) of the amended tobacco control act of 2013 by inviting school and college goers at a promotional event of a new brand in Jhalakathi district, reads a report on online news portal www.banglamail24.com on May 26, 2014. The issue has also been covered on some other news portals, and raised a sense of concern among the guardians who are shocked by the law violation of the tobacco company.
The programme that was held at a Jahlakathi community center was about the launching of a new brand – Brighton. A documentary was also screened on the event over the benefits of smoking. Latter, the organizers distributed foods and cigarette packets among the participants. The food packets were labeled with Akij logo, and they provided an extra cigarette packet to those kids who have liked their facebook page.
The students and kids were seen smoking cigarettes following the programme. But an official denied the allegations of documentary screening and cigarette distribution among the kids.
