The Commerce Minister of Bangladesh, Tofail Ahmed, who is now in Thimphu to attend the SAFTA Ministerial Meeting, had an audience with Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan at the Royal Palace. The King extended a very warm welcome to the Commerce Minister. The King also recalled his two wonderful visits to Dhaka in 2011 & 2013 fondly reminiscing the warm hospitality extended to him and his wife by the Government and the people of Bangladesh. He also praised the excellent relationship that the two countries enjoy in almost all areas of cooperation.
While conveying his greetings to the President and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, he mentioned that he holds the Bangladesh Prime Minister in high esteem. The Commerce Minister, in his turn, mentioned that Bhutan was the first country to recognize Bangladesh even before the War of Liberation was over. He also recalled the continued support of the Government and the people of Bhutan during our Liberation War as well as the visit to Bangladesh by the father of the present King in 1974.
The King mentioned that a lot of Bhutanese students study in Bangladesh, particularly in the medical colleges, opining that there are further opportunities to strengthen the relationship in the education sector.
The Commerce Minister briefed on various socio-economic developments made by Bangladesh under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He also sought support of Bhutan to the candidature of Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP for the post of IPU President. The King extended Bhutan’s support in principle.
The King handed over a letter to the Commerce Minister addressed to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh conveying his thanks and greetings appreciating all her support and good wishes towards Bhutan.
The Commerce Minister also met the Prime Minister as well as the Economic Affairs Minister of Bhutan and discussed various issues including trade, investment, connectivity, cooperation in hydropower etc.
