All members of CICA unanimously decide to accept Bangladesh as a full member of the Organisation. The membership will be formalised on 20 May 2014 right before the 4th Summit of CICA scheduled to open on 21 May 2014 in Shanghai, China where Hon’ble Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP will lead Bangladesh delegation. Bangladesh has been observer in CICA since 2010.
Established in 1999, CICA is an inter-governmental forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia. It is a forum based on the recognition that there is close link between peace, security and stability in Asia and in the rest of the world. The announcement by the President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan at the 47th Session of the UN general Assembly on 5 October 1992 marks the beginning of the CICA process. The focus of the organisation is on confidence building measures (CBM) including new threats and challenges, economic dimension, environmental dimension and human dimension.
CICA has 25 members namelyAfghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palestinian territories, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan & Vietnam; and 08 Observers states are Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Ukraine & United States; and 04 organisations are also observers such as UN, OSCE, Arab League and Parliamentary Assembly of the Turkic Speaking Countries (TURKPA). CICA has its Secretariat in Almaty, Kazakhstan
The entry of Bangladesh into CICA as a full member is strategically important for Bangladesh. CICA, being one of the largest political entities in Asia, has potentials to create impact upon the politics of this continent. It also pursues the multilateral cooperation in the fields of peace, security and stability in Asia. CICA has the potential to expanding trade among the member states, particularly with Central Asian countries. Bangladesh would try to promote trade and investment relations with the CICA member states. Bangladesh can utilise the CICA forum for projecting Bangladesh.
