The governmen is working to raise the rate of technical and vocational education to 20 percent by 2020 from present 8 percent to supplement the goal to turn Bangladesh a middle-income country by 2021.
Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) Chairmen Dr Md Mustafizur Rahman divulged the govenment plan at a press conference in Dhaka on Saturday.
He said the government would increase the number of tecnical educational institutions both in public and private sectors to attain the goal.
The Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) organsied the press meet ahead of the international conference on ‘Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for Sustainable Development’.
Deputy Project Director of government’s Skill and Training Enhancement Project (STEP) AJM Abdullah Hel Baki said at the press conference the government is awarding certficates to those who have no institutional training but acuquired technical skills through practical works.
He said the initiative will earn them acknowledgeent of their skills and help them secure jobs, particially in overseas markets where certificates of professional skills play a key role.
IDEB President A K M A Hamid and General Secretary Md Shamsur Rahman and Program Officer at ILO Country Office Dr Hari Pada Das also spoke at the press meet.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the three-day TVET conference, organised by IDEB and Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC), Manila, on Thursday.
IDEB officials said the conference, first of its kind in Bangladesh, is aimed at enhancing the number of skilled manpower and building a skill culture.
Representatives from 17 CPSC member countries, Australia and Canada will attend the conference. Representatives of development partners based in Dhaka will also join it while TVET specialists from home and abroad will present over 50 papers in different sessions.
IDEB officials said the aims of the event are to enhance the number of skilled manpower through technological vocational education and training and make national development sustainable through ensuring their greater participation in every field of production and productivity.
