“The Awarding Ceremony of DCLE Debating Championship 2014 took place on the 21st June evening at Brac Centre Inn. DCLE’s student organisation DDC [DCLE Debating Consortium] had organised the Inter university debate tournament where 68 private and public universities had come forward and ultimately 32 university teams participated.
The culmination of the three-day long battle of wits was through awarding the champions, runners-up and best speakers yesterday.
In the English debate category, Dhaka Medical College took the Champion’s title, Dhaka University were the Runners-up, while Tasnim Jara of Dhaka Medical College took the credit for the Best Speaker of the tournament.
In the Bangla category, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University took the championship, runners-up being Dhaka Medical College and the Best Speaker of the tournament being Mashaed Hassan Shimanto of IBA, Jahangirnagar University.
The champions teams received the crest from Mr. Justice Mohammad Abdur Rouf, former CEC and Judge Supreme Court of Bangladesh, and were awarded BDT. 20,000 each by M. Nurul Islam the Principal of DCLE.
The runners-up teams received their crests from eminent writer, founder of Chittagong Art College, master of calligraphy, Mr. Sabih-ul Alam and were awarded BDT 10,000 each.
The best speakers received their crests from Lt. Col. (retd) Mahmoodur Rahman, former Managing Director Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and individually were awarded BDT 5,000 each from DCLE.
Barrister Fatema Anwar, Head of Laws of DCLE welcomed the guests, among whom were Barrister Aminul Hoque, Professor Dr. Sukomal Barua, Associate Professor of English at Dhaka University-Batool Sarwar, Sayeed Milky- Unisef and the senior faculty members of the respective universities. Adjudicators in the tournament including Barrister Naser Alam, Barrister Anik Rusd Hoque, Barrister Tanvir Parvez, Barrister Tureen Afrose of Brac university, Barrister Shakir Uddin Ahmed Bappy, Barrister Nabil Ehsan, Barrister Shihab Khan, associate professor of English at Dhaka University- Golam Gaus Al Qadery, Dr. Nasrin Akter- researcher in Banglapedia, Secretary Bipul Chandra Roy, Ahsan Habib Khan, Mohammed Rakibul Hassan – lecturer World University, teacher Tahmina Kawsar, Baha Uddin Foyzee, Najmus Sakib Nirjhor & Ala Uddin Mohammed – Economics,DU, Md. Didar Hossain- Asian University, Poet & writer Saiful Islam Shobuz and Managing Director of Communicants Zulqarnain Sabih Suman.
The debates were in traditional format and the contestants were judged on their structure, clarity, focus, content and use of language. They expressed deep satisfaction with the whole tournament, especially the effort and sincerity of the DDC members – all students of University of London International Programmes.
The Convenor of DDC Md. Zahid Hasan Akhand received the award for best organising skill, and the other members and volunteers received acknowledgements for their skills manifested in the event.
