ANUB holds Press Conference demanding withdrawal of VAT imposed on the students of Private Universities. A press conference was held today on the withdrawal of VAT from the students of private universities organized by the Association of Non-Government Universities of Bangladesh (ANUB) at the VIP Lounge of National Press Club, Dhaka. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Shaikh Kabir Hossain, Chairman of the Association. Secretary General Mr. Benajir Ahmed, Vice Chairman Prof. Dr.Abdul Mannan Chowdhurhy and Mr. Shafiqur Rahman, President, National Press Club, Dhaka were also present in the conference.
The speakers delivered their speech to withdraw the current VAT 7.5% on private university students imposed by the government for the interest of the students of private universities.
It was also stated that about 4.5 lac students are studying in the 83 private universities and have been saving large amount of foreign currency by studying in these universities. Govt.is expecting to be a mid income country within 2021 but due to imposing VAT on private universities thus it may be hard to achieve the goal within the stipulated time. We already met with the Finance Minister, Finance Advisor of the Prime Minister and Chairman of NBR to this end.
ANUB further gave importance to withdraw VAT from the private university students with a view to developing the economy of the country and the greater interest of higher education.
