Disability Orientation Training for Trainers held on 22nd September

On the 22nd of September 2012 “Disability Orientation Training for Trainers” took place at the German House, jointly organized by Promotion of Social and Environmental Standards in the Industry (a project of Bangladesh Government and German Government through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH) and CBM. It was a one day long workshop and more than 29 participants attended.

The objective of this training was aimed to provide required skills, quality and technique needed for trainers to impart training to physically challenged poor women and facilitate job to the disabled people of Bangladesh in the RMG sector. This training is the first of its type and the trainers were the government officials.

The workshop was arranged in an interactive way and it demonstrated on real life situations. The first part started with the topic that addressed current situation of disabled people in development sector and discussed about different barriers that caused the exclusion. Then to sensitize the participants and to show the importance of inclusion of disabled people a Bangla Video was shown. The second round of the workshop talked about gender and disability in Bangladesh’s context- how disabled people specially women are neglected and do not have their basic right. Then some key opportunities for work at the RMG sector for the disabled poor women were addressed.

Moreover, it was also pointed out how work place could be arranged where disabled people could be included- for example- having bigger elevators. Then the workshop concluded with few remarks that talked about commitments on disabled issues along with a video of Rekha that says “Yes we can”.

CBM – CBM is an international Christian development organization whose purpose is to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities and those at risk of disability in the most underserved areas of the world. It was founded in 1908 in Germany and started its work in Bangladesh in areas of the world. It was founded in 1908 in Germany and started its work in Bangladesh in 1972. CBM advocates a “twin track approach”. Mainstreaming disability into all strategic areas of development cooperation and building up capacity among its local partner organizations as well as supporting specific disablility as a cross – cutting and socio-political issue with a strong emphasis on human rights. Economic , cultural and environmental barriers anticipate that persons with disabilities can fully participate and contribute to their community. Bangladesh is home to more than 20 million persons with disabilities, the majority of them visually impaired. CBM BCO under CBM Regional Office South Asia currently works with partner organization running 10 projects in Bangladesh and several networking initiatives.
