High Commissioner of India Mr. Pankaj Saran visited the Bangladesh Standards Testing Institute (BSTI) at Tejgaon on December 8, 2014.
In accordance with the Joint Communique signed during the visit of H.E. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India in 2010, India and Bangladesh are implementing a US$ 2.13 million project under the Indian Line of Credit for the upgradation of the BSTI.
The project includes the establishment of a food testing laboratory, a gold testing laboratory and a cement and brick testing laboratory equipped with modern equipment. The contract for the project was signed in November 2013 following which supplies from India for the project are well underway. The project is expected to be completed before the target date of June 2015.
Apart from upgradation of the facilities of BSTI, the BSTI and the Bureau of Indian Standards are also in discussion to conclude an Agreement on bilateral cooperation.
Both initiatives are aimed at facilitating easier trade between India and Bangladesh and streamlining testing procedures for exports to each other’s countries.
