Lalon Singer Farida Parveen and Fakir Tuntun Shah captivated the Belgian audience

Noted Lalon Singer Farida Parveen and Baul Fakir Tuntun Shah performed at the ‘Sufi Night’ which was organized jointly by the Embassy of Bangladesh, Brussels and the prestigious Centre for Fine Arts, Belgium– BOZAR in the evening of 25 October 25, 2014.

The ensemble comprised flutist Gazi Abdul Hakim, Mr. Debendra Nath Chatterjee (Tabla), Mr. Md. Delwar Hossain (Dotara) and Mr. ASM Reza Babu (Dhol). Sufi musical troupes from Morocco, Turkey, Algeria and Senegal also participated in the event.

In the welcoming remarks, Ambassador of Bangladesh Ms. Ismat Jahan spoke on the richness of Baul music in Bangladesh which is comparable to the genre of Sufi music. Referring to the ever inspiring spiritual message of Baul music, she mentioned the celebrated contribution of Lalon Fakir, the greatest of all Bauls.

She added that art and culture transcend geographical boundaries and can create cultural link among people distanced by continents. The participation of Bangladesh in the “Sufi night” was therefore, important in bringing Bangladesh’s cultural richness to the Belgian audience.

The hour long performance of renowned Bangladeshi artistes was simply captivating. The large Bozar auditorium was full to its capacity with more than 1500 persons in the audience. The Embassy received whole hearted appreciation from the invited dignitaries and other guests, as well as from totally unknown Belgian audience who was exposed for the first time to Bangladeshi music.

The superb performance of the Bangladesh team has no doubt enhanced its image as a culturally rich country and has also created interests in Bangladesh’s music.
