This is to cordially request the presence of your media representatives at the Press Briefing, in the seminar on Occupational Health and Safety: “Impact 99%, together we can change”, followed by lunch.
The experiences between GIZ and Western Marine Shipyard have proven that improvements are possible to strengthen the health of its workforce and the quality of working environment. Due to this successful collaboration Western Marine Shipyard now has attained a renowned international standard in workplace health and safety and injury rates have dropped by 99%. WMS is the first shipyard, and one of the few businesses in Bangladesh to obtain this. This has increased their competiveness, market positioning and thus profitability.
At this critical moment, as stakeholders are striving to make garment factories safer, the occupational health and safety approach and frameworks developed within the GIZ – Western Marine collaboration have significant potential to be transferred to other business sectors in Bangladesh and contribute meaningfully to the national occupational health debate.
The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development selected this occupational health and safety approach as a best practice in German Development Cooperation and assisted to develop a publication “Healthy business, healthy workers, healthy communities”. GIZ, the German Development Cooperation, together with Western Marine Shipyard, aims to bring together stakeholders to share valuable experiences and lessons learned of this collaboration, and come up with critical recommendations and a way forward to improve the workplace health and safety situation in Bangladesh.
