Sustenance of Small Farmers and Right to Food must be a Part in Sustainable Development Goal Drive. Today twenty three organizations including farmers, labor, civil society right groups in a joint press conference held at National Press Club Dhaka title “ Civil Society Expectations from Prime Minister in UN Sustainable Development Summit : Global Cooperation is a Fundamental to Domestic Resource Mobilization in Least Developing Countries” urged Prime Minister to raise the global responsibility of climate forced migrants.

The press conference was moderated by Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of Equity and Justice Working Group Bangladesh (EquityBD), position papers was presented by Sayed Aminul Haque on behalf of the group, other speakers of the press conference were, ASM Badrul Alam of Bangladesh Farmers Forum / MTCP 2 (Mid term Cooperation Project – 2) , Aminur Rasul Babul of Unnayan Dhara Trust, Ferdous Ara Rumee from International Rural Women Day Observation Committee (IRWDC) and Mostafa Kamal Akhanda of COAST.

In stating group demand Sayed Aminul Haque mentioned following three points (i) Prime Minister must speak a demand to draw new UN protocol for rights and responsibility of climate forced migrants which is a major problem for Bangladesh, as international climate scientist forecasted by the year 2050 it will be one in each five people in Bangladesh (ii) Prime Minister should also asked for a UN Tax Commission with Universal Tax and Bank Transparency Standard so that there will be reduction of illicit flow, at present according to IMF and other global research body which is more than net ODA flow to developing countries, and also as there are gradual reduction in development overseas assistance and (iii) Finally the Prime Minister must tell that WTO (World Trade Organization) rules are contradictory especially in respect of assisting Least Developing Countries (LDC), e.g., still there are no operationalization of Bali package of DFQF (duty free quota free) access to LDCs.

Aminur Rasul Babul said that, whatever the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) achievements has happened it was due to democratic practices, taking the learning from past government must eliminate worries of people that in future there will be good governance in ensuring democratic institutions like free media, independent judiciary, autonomous local government, independent and strong election commission, anti corruption commission and human rights commission. This is a must for SDG achievement.

ASM Badurl Alam of Bangladesh Krishok Forum and MTCP2 mentioned that small farmers provide in fact 80 % of global food, but they are in pauperization and losing of land ownership. Government must protect them and accept right to food as a fundamental right of the people.

Ferdous Ara Rumee of IRWDOC) said that no women and girl should be left out in SDGs. There should not be complacence in respect of gender parity in primary enrolment and reduction in material and infant mortality, she insist to give importance to women and girl’s health and nutrition in future.

Mostafa Kamal Akhanda of COAST has said that, in respect of MDG achievement, Bangladesh is society of multi drivers of development, off course where government in lead position, but there were a role of civil society. He said that concept of good governance in fact a balance interplay of state, market and civil society, government must consider creating independent enabling environment for civil societies for achieving SDGs in future.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury the moderator of the press conference said that the Prime Minister should reflect the people’s aspiration going in out of box, as she has been considered as outstanding leader and she should also take bold step in country especially in respecting free fair independent space for growing of basic democratic institutions which should be considered as fundamental to achieving SDGs.
