Aiming to receive tax exemption in the upcoming National Budget by manipulating the state’s tax structures, the Cigarette Manufacturers Association of Bangladesh (CMAB) is all set to sit for a pre-budget meeting with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) – state’s revenue collection body.
The pre-budget meeting is scheduled on April 15, 2015 at 10.00am at the Board Meeting Room of the NBR building. Earlier, a three-member representative of the CMAB had met the Finance Minister on March 22, 2015 with the demands – to reduce tax on tobacco products in the National Budget of 2015 – 16 fiscals, resettlement of the slabs and foreign cigarette smuggling prevention.
Notably, the CMAB representatives, in April of 2014, had met with the then NBR Chairman, secretly, to reduce tax on tobacco in 2014 -15 National Budget and receiving some other facilities to sustain and expand their death-inviting business while the issue received massive media attention with negative criticisms across the country.
Therefore, all of us should be careful in the current days so that tobacco companies cannot hold such meetings by violating the FCTC Article 5.3.
