The mass media outlets in Slovenia like TV, magazines and newspapers are all operated by both state-owned and for-profit corporations which depend on advertising, subscription, and other sales-related revenues. When it comes to newspapers, Slovenia has only five daily newspapers and 14 non-daily newspapers, but there are several magazines. The first magazine for women, “Slovenka” was published in Slovenia in 1896. Also in addition to local magazines, there are Slovenian versions of international magazine titles, such as “Playboy”, “Elle” and “Men’s Health” etc. The Slovenian press landscape includes, first, nationally-oriented and -distributed publications, either daily or weekly; second, daily or weekly publications on a regional scale, though they may be nationally distributed too; and third, local newspapers, mostly weeklies or periodicals, which has a limited geographical distribution. Some of the daily newspapers are Delo, Dnevnik, EkipaSN, Slovenske novice etc.
Television in Slovenia was first introduced in 1958, and the first TV station in Slovenia was launched in 1958 as TV Ljubljana (now TV Slovenija). There are 48 TV stations and 710,000 TV sets. More than half the country has access to three commercial stations, TV3, POP TV, and Kanal A. Kanal A was Slovenia’s first commercial private television station and began broadcasting in 1989. Currently, about 100 cable operators manage the country’s cable television broadcasts. TV SLO3, MUX A, MUX C are some of the tv channels of Slovenia.
Slovenia has 178 radio stations: 89 non-stop radio stations; 38 of these are commercial; 26 are local, regional and noncommercial; 15 are for Slovenes abroad; 2 are student stations, and 8 are public radio services. In 2008, 98 radio license holders were registered, of whom 11 were broadcasting via cable or internet only. The rate of listening radio is pretty good. The Slovenians spend an average of more than three hours daily listening to the radio. The most-listened-to station is Val 202. Second is Radio Slovenia, which boasts more than 500,000 listeners. Both Radio and TV follow the Media Law which forbids cross-ownership of radio and television channels and also TLC companies cannot own a radio or TV channel. Some of the radio channels of Slovenia are A1, Ars, Val 202 (national radios) etc., Celje, Cerkno (Regional and local) etc., and some online radio channels like Radio Top, Novi Radio, Radio Terminal etc.
The use of internet in Slovenia is extensive. The number of individuals with a computer is 548,000. There are no government restrictions on access to the Internet or credible reports that the government monitors e-mail or Internet chat rooms without appropriate legal authority. Among the social media sites, Facebook is the most popular and most used site. Other sites like Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube and Twitter, all have a constant rate of use.
