The media outlets in Burundi is formed with print, broadcast and internet outlets. The media outlets are subject to censorship by the government. The government has a strong domination of the media outlets so that they cannot expose something controversial. In fact, operating the media outlets in a turbulent political climate is really tough. The media outlets are always to maintain the censorship for their own survival. Though the media outlets tried to create a peaceful situation in the country amid the ethnic cleansing and political instability, the attempts failed.

The civil war is the key turbulent that lead the media outlets in disorders. But the now the situations are over. And gradually, they have become stronger. In some points, the media outlets are to negotiate with the government before publishing or broadcasting the matters. When the issues are too sensitive, the media outlets are not allowed to print or broadcast them.

Most of the media outlets are privately owned and they are trying to contribute to change the country. In fact, they are creating opportunities for people so that they watch shows and events broadcast on the media outlets. They also publish some important news and views for the readers to generate some positive ideas about everything. By this way, the media outlets are trying to bring a social change in the country.

Radio is the most preferred media outlet in the country and people prefer to listen to radio than other types of media outlets. In fact, readership ratio is lower in the country due to low literacy rate. So, the radio stations try to broadcast programs and event that are intended to bring some change among the listeners. Moreover, the media outlets are now more tolerating and they make reports with great care. Before broadcasting or publication of any news and information, they justify the sources and ensures the authenticity. Through this way, the country is turning to a developed nation in different terms including politics.

But the media outlets also experienced some crackdowns in 2015 and the journalists and other media personnel were harassed in various ways. Some of the radio stations were shut down as they broadcast some sensitive issues regarding a coup.

Currently, there are five newspapers are available in the country and one of them is run by the state. The government provides all the news and information for the readers. The other four private newspapers are available across the nation and come with a good number of news and information for the readers. They come with different languages too. But being a low readership, the newspapers are not regularly published.

Four television channels are on the run in the country and one of them are owned by the state. The government takes care of the television stations and supplies necessary media contents for the television operation. The private television channels also broadcast a wide range of programs and events for the nationwide audience.

The radio broadcast in the country is dominated by both the state and the private initiatives. The government owns one of the three radio stations in the country. The radio programs are broadcast in different languages including English.

Besides, some internet websites are also on the rise in the country. The rate of internet users is increasing and they are browsing many news websites of home and abroad.
