The majority of the media outlets in the African region are restricted by the government. They are unable to express their thoughts and opinions. The governments have their direct control on the media outlets and they do that for the betterment of the nations. But the media outlets of Senegal are a bit free from such restrictions. It is often said that the media outlets are unrestricted and livelier than the neighboring nations. The media outlets are also diverse in nature and a wide number of outlets are operating inside the country.

The constitution is aware of some issues and thus ensures the media freedom. But at the same time, it also checks the media activities. As a result, the media outlets are always stricter in expressing their thoughts and opinions. When any media outlet violates the rules and regulations, the state takes stern actions against them. In fact, freedom of expression does not refer that the media outlets should publish or broadcast whatever they want. Besides, the media outlets are also careful about the issues. Accordingly, they do not publish or broadcast any such things that might damage the country’s image or reputation.

The traditional media outlets in Senegal is made with newspapers, television and radio stations. The readership of the newspaper is moderate but radio is the most influential media outlet in the country. There are places in Senegal where the print media outlets are unavailable. But the radio stations have their setups there and they have a nationwide broadcast. As a direct result, they have become the primary source of information and entertainment for the nation.

The radio stations are set up based on both commercial and community perspectives. The commercial radio stations are not available across the nation but the community radio stations have covered the gap. They are available in even the remotest part of the country. And so, the listeners are able to know about the news and events happening around them and in the world.

The journalism in the country is free and fair for some reasons. First of all, the journalists are highly trained and well educated. A good number of the journalists have their foreign degrees. And it has become beneficial for the media outlets that the journalists are able to define what is better for them. So, the rate of yellow journalism is lower in the country and the audience gets the exact and precise information for their needs.

The country has around 20 newspapers and they are published in several languages. Some the newspapers are state-run while the rest others are privately operated. The majority of the newspapers publish news and reports on generalized issues. They always maintain a self-censorship regarding publication of the news and events. The readership of the newspapers is relatively moderate than the neighboring nations.

There are around five television stations available in the country and they provide a wide number of programs and shows for their respective audience. The television channels are available in several languages and mostly preferred by the urban people because the television channels are not available across the country.

The radio stations are widespread and have a good number of stations across the nation. They come with a good number of events and shows. And most of the people turn on the radios to know about the latest updates around them.

The use of the internet is available in the country but most of the people use the internet for their social communication. But there are some people who use the internet to browse different newspaper website of home and abroad.
