National Survey on Covid-19 Economic Impact by PPRC & BIGD



Power and Participation Research Cenre (PPRC) and BRAC Institute for Governance and Development (BIGD) completes national level rapid response survey of the impacts of Covid-19 (Coronavirus).

As the Covid-19 health crisis continues to unfold, the Bangladesh economy is also under threat. This crisis will be most acutely experienced by the low income population – families depending on the informal sector, especially in the urban areas, including rickshaw pullers, day laborers, housemaids, restaurant workers, vendors, auto drivers among others as well as millions of workers in the rural areas, farmers, fishermen, agricultural laborers, small business owners and returning migrants who have no means to earn a living now are suffering the same fate.

Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) launched a joint large scale telephonic rapid response research project on April 1 to understand the immediate economic impact of the crisis on such families. The survey is being concluded today 12th April. 

A cross-sectional sample of around 6000 households in both rural and urban Bangladesh werereached out of a total of 12000. The research is intended to support better design and targeting of emergency support programs for the vulnerable population. Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Executive Chairman, PPRC and Dr. Imran Matin, Executive Director, BIGD will unveil the findings through a virtual press conference on 16th April details of which will be separately shared later.
