Scrapping of price slabs and increase in tax rate (supplementary duty) is the best way to cut the consumption of tobacco products says a report published in the Financial Express on April 27, 2014 by an ATMA member FHM Humayan Kabir. National Board of Revenue’s faulty fixing of price slab failed to discourage smoking and consumption of smokeless tobacco products resulting an increased occurrence of lung and cardiovascular diseases in the country, the report added. The experts suggested erasing price slab and introducing unified tax rate through imposing 70 percent Supplementary Duty (SD) on the retail price of all tobacco products (cigarettes, bidis, gul, jarda, etc).
